Timeline for Home Design & Renovation: How Long Does It Take?

Many variables can affect your renovation timeline. My job is to predict the most common challenges and keep the decision process moving to avoid costly and inconvenient delays to a renovation project. Here’s a look at the renovation process and timeline…

Phase 1: Planning

Once we decide to work together, my team gets started with a vengeance. We begin by photographing and measuring the existing conditions.  This information, combined with our observations and discussions about your needs, initiates the design process and leads to conceptual designs.

How Long It Can Take: The collaborative design of an entire house interior typically takes 3-6 months, while designing a kitchen alone can take 1-2 months. Expect several rounds of architectural revisions. We need your input to get everything just the way you imagine it. The design phase moves quickly when homeowners review, provide feedback, and make decisions promptly.

Phase 2: Procurement

We have a secret weapon: our brilliant design assistant.  She diligently tracks orders, payments, and deliveries for your home's materials, fixtures, furniture, and finishes. By ordering early, we mitigate inevitable delays and stock limitations. My goal is to avoid rescheduling the plumber because the fixtures aren't on-site.

How Long It Can Take: Procuring building materials usually takes 1-4 months, depending on the level of customization. Once the design is finalized, cabinetry, often a key element in our interior designs, can take 6-12 weeks to fabricate.

Phase 3: Construction

We act as the bridge between you and the contractor. Often, we have a deeper understanding of your design desires than the contractor, and we can accurately communicate that to them.  With our knowledge of the building process and best practices, we efficiently communicate decisions to the contractor, minimizing potential delays.

How Long It Can Take: We always account for unforeseen circumstances such as hidden termite infestations, terrible weather, illness, or additional research into special materials.  Construction on a small project like a master bath or laundry room may take about one month.  In contrast, a 6,000 sq. ft. beach house could take at least a year.

Phase 4: Installation

Installation of furniture and accessories is everyone's favorite phase.  We ask that the homeowners leave us to create the magic of a "big reveal" whenever possible.

How Long It Can Take: A small furnishings project can be installed and ready in just one day. A whole house may take 2-5 days and require a full team of workers.
